POST HISTORY

In May 1965, The American Legion, Department of New Mexico, in Albuquerque, decided they would like to start a new Legion Post in the far Northeast Heights.  First they needed at least fifteen Veterans, who were eligible for the American Legion, so they could receive a temporary charter.  They also needed someone to assume the responsibility of working for a permanent charter.  Dick Yeomans was chosen by the Department to assume these duties; until a commander could be elected.

Our first meeting was held at Department Headquarters, which was located at 5200 Central avenue NE.  We then moved to the Albuquerque Federal Savings & Loan building located at the corner of Menaul and Wyoming NE, with all the windows, doors and walls broken.  The building belonged to the Michael Brothers Bars.  They consented to let us use the building rent-free, if we fixed it up, which was accomplished by the fifteen members plus many more that had signed up in the Post by then.

While all of this was happening, many business matters had to be taken care of, such as selection of temporary officers, the name and number of the Post, when to close the temporary charter, look for a larger Post home in order to apply for for a club liquor license, means of raising funds, starting a ladies auxiliary, permits, tax numbers and many other things that had to be done in order to start a Legion Post.
